The combination of good conditions, a great
venue and the excellent quality of the competition made this a great
event. Seven women and thirty-two guys from eight different nations
entered. The event was also the second event of two used by the Australian
Yachting Federation (AYF) to nominate the sailors to compete at the
2003 Pre-Olympic Regatta in Athens this year and to nominate the Youth
to join the Australian Team to compete at the 2003 ISAF Youth Sailing
World Championship to be held 17-26 July, 2003 at Madeira, Portugal.
After a relatively painless registration, racing got underway as scheduled
on the Saturday. Four races were conducted in a nice nor-easter of 15
-18 knots. Lars Kleppich won the first two races in the Raceboard/Mistral
class while Michael Lancey took line honours in the next two as the
pressure began to ease. Byron McIlveen was on a mission in the Unlimited
Raceboard Class winning all four races. After a testing couple of hours
racing it was time to pack up and join in the BBQ prepared by the members
of the Marmong Point Sailing Club.
Sunday’s forecast was for 40deg temperatures which made another day
of good nor-easters quite probable. Racing was to get started at 11.00am
but by that time the surface of Lake Macquarie was like a mill pond.
An early lunch was the way to go and then to wait in the shade for the
wind to arrive. And it did …. 2.15 pm and racing was underway in a respectable
12- 15 knot east nor-easter. Three races were completed with Lars winning
all three. Michael Lancey was never far behind scoring two seconds and
a third for his afternoon’s effort. In the womens, Natasha Sturges and
Allison Shreeve were sharing the spoils with Natasha being the first
woman to finish in four of the seven races sailed so far and Allison
collecting the remaining three. Byron McIlveen continued on his winning
way by clearly scoring three more first places.
A strong southerly front blasted Lake Macquarie early on Monday morning
and was still blowing at 18-20 knots by the time racing was to start.
Two races were sailed to complete the nine race program with Lars once
again showing the way to the finishing line in both and, again, Michael
Lancey chasing him all the way to finish second in both. Natasha claimed
a first and a second finishing woman while Jessica Crisp proved she
still had plenty of power left by being the first woman home in the
last race. No one is quite sure what happened to Byron in the last race
in the Unlimited Raceboard Class. After eight consecutive first places
he was finally beaten by Nathan Clift but ended up with an unbeaten
final score of seven bullets after dropping his worst two results –
a first and a second.
There were many outstanding efforts made by individual sailors. Jonothan
Bonnitcha finished the series with two seconds and four third places
… a great show of consistent sailing. Benjamin Tillier from France was
very quick and finished sixth overall even though he is still a Youth.
Likewise, young Corey Plant a Junior sailor from Oak Flats, put in an
excellent performance to claim tenth spot overall beating a lot of very
experienced sailors in the process and virtually assuring his nomination
to the Australian Youth Team. Natasha sailing for Great Britain and
currently ranked No 1 on the ISAF World Ranking List, finished in fourth
place overall just four points in front of Australia’s Allison Shreeve.
Mistral equipment was used by the first finishing fifteen competitors
while local junior sailor, Sam Fawkes, was the first home in sixteenth
place using equipment other than Mistral.
A big thanks to the international sailors who competed and to the Marmong
Point Sailing Club for their involvement.
