LAKE ILLAWARRA
- 80 km / 1 hour south of Sydney
- many locations; best near Warrawong, Primbee, Oak Flats, Dapto and
Berkeley
- Turn off F6 freeway at Warrawong, Dapto or Oak Flats exits
- Type of sailing: Longboard / Slalom / Wave. Lake sailing with flat
water to choppy conditions, no big swell
- Preferred breeze: Any! (Nor'westers are not good)
- Launching/rigging: Mostly grass areas
SANDON POINT
- 65 km / 50 minutes south of Sydney
- Turn off F6 freeway at Bulli Pass exit, beach is east of the Wollongong
suburb of Bulli
- Type of sailing: Slalom and waves. Open ocean
- Preferred breeze: Nor'easter
- Launching/rigging: Grass rigging area, sandy protected beach
PEGGIES
- 65 km / 50 minutes south of Sydney
- Turn off F6 freeway at Bulli Pass exit, beach is east of the Wollongong
suburb of Bulli, just South of Sandon Point
- Type of sailing: Waves. Open ocean
- Preferred breeze: Southerly
- Launching/rigging: Grass rigging area, sandy protected beach
EAST CORRIMAL BEACH
- 70 km / 1 hour south of Sydney
- Turn off F6 freeway at Bulli Pass exit, beach is east of the Wollongong
suburb of Corrimal
- Type of sailing: Waves Open ocean
- Preferred breeze: Nor'easter
- Launching/rigging: Beach. Camping ground nearby
TOWRADGI BEACH
- 75 krn / 1 hour south of Sydney
- Turn off F6 freeway at Bulli Pass exit, beach is east of the Wollongong
suburb of Towradgi, best spot is near swimming pool.
- Type of sailing: Slalom and Waves. Open ocean
- Preferred breeze: Nor'easter
- Launching/rigging: Grass rigging area
NORTH WOLLONGONG BEACH
- 80 km / 1 hour south of Sydney
- Turn off F6 freeway at Wollongong exit, beach is east of Wollongong
in front of the Novotel Hotel.
- Type of sailing: Slalom and Waves. Open ocean
- Preferred breeze: Nor'easter and southerly
- Launching/rigging: Grass rigging area
WINDANG BEACH
- 90 km / 1 hour 15 minutes south of Sydney
Turn off F6 freeway Port Kembla exit and follow Shellharbour Road to the Windang
Bridge and turn left.
- Type of sailing: Longboard / Slalom / Waves. Lake entrance with flat
water, good for learners. Open ocean sailing off the beach
- Preferred breeze: Nor'easter and southerly
- Launching/rigging: Grass rigging area. Camping ground nearby
GERROA (northern end
of Seven Mile Beach)
- 120 km / 1 hour 30 minutes south of Sydney
- Follow the Princes Highway south to Dunmore (south of Kiama) take
the Gerringong exit and follow the road to Gerroa. Park near the caravan
park south side of the bridge.
- Type of sailing: Open ocean slalom and waves arguably the best wave
sailing location south of Sydney. Excellent bear-aways in Nor'east breeze.
- Preferred breeze: Nor'easter, not bad in westerly and sou'wester
- Launching/rigging: Grass rigging in car park. Camping ground nearby
SHOALHAVEN HEADS BEACH
- 130 km / 1 hour 40 minutes south of Sydney
- Follow the Princes Highway south to Dunmore (south of Kiama) take
the Gerringong exit and follow the road to Shoalhaven Heads exit.
- Type of sailing: Open ocean slalom and waves. Similar to Gerroa but
nor'easter slightly more onshore. When the river is open sail out over
the bar for great jumps. River is great for slalom or beginners in nor'easters
and southerlys but take a small fin as there are a lot of sandbars.
- Preferred breeze: Nor'easter; sometimes working when there is little
wind at Gerroa
- Launching/rigging: Beach near Surf Club. River grassy rigging and
sandy beach near boat ramp and wharf.
